Dear readers of the US-Belarus Observer, The New Year 2017 has arrived! How quickly 2016 flew by; it has already been relegated to history. The champagne spilled on my jacket during the New Year celebrations has not yet dried, and already the youthful, anxious face of 2017 has appeared in the doorway. Hello, new friend, I ask you to be better than your
predecessor! Although the Bible advises, “Give thanks for everything,” people are always hopeful that the future will be even better. Some wise people, raising a toast to the New Year, say more cautiously, “Let the new year be no worse than the outgoing
year!” During 2016, our magazine gained many friends in America.
These are people who, with the help of our authors, have discovered the small, beautiful, humble but proud country of Belarus. The same Belarus that, during the war with the Nazis, lost one in four of its inhabitants. The same Belarus, whose people are particularly thoughtful, patient and spiritually beautiful. From our magazine articles, you will learn how people live in Belarus, what they think, how they grow vegetables, how they
educate their children, how they create computer programs, how they fly into space, and how they joke.
Each reader, like Columbus, discovers this new country for himself or herself. The US-BELARUS OBSERVER will try to be an even more faithful friend to you in the New Year. In one of the articles, I wrote, “America needs new friends, and I recommend Belarus as a reliable and trusted friend.” I am pleased that together, even
though it may happen slower than we would like, we are steadily building bridges of friendship in politics, economy and everyday life. In 2017, we’ll show you that a vacation in Belarus can be five times cheaper, your health treatments can be three times
cheaper, and you can even replace your teeth for a mere onefifth
of the US price. People love new discoveries, so we will continue helping you
discover a wonderful secret – the mystery of the land and the people of Belarus. Let each day of the New Year echo this festive toast, To the friendship between America and Belarus, to the future of our children, and to peace across the world!
