Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Belarus and the United States of America.
On December 28th, 1991, Belarus and America agreed to establish diplomatic relations on an embassy level. The United States became the second country in the world to recognize the sovereignty of the Republic of Belarus, and offered the young Belarusian state the establishment of full-fledged diplomatic relations. For a quarter of a century, relations between Belarus and the US have withstood a difficult path of maturation and development. Unresolved issues still remain between our countries, a number of which are of a principled nature for the respective parties.
At the same time, it is symbolic that the anniversary of the establishment of Belarusian-American diplomatic relations falls during a period of gradual normalization of bilateral relations. We see the restoration of confidence and the return of the parties to dialogue on a wide range of issues from economics and investments; to the military sphere; culture and preservation of heritage; from the development of democratic institutions to a strengthening of scientific and technical cooperation. Belarus and the US are united much more than they are disconnected. Diplomatic relations between our countries are only 25 years old, but the historical and cultural ties between our people bridge centuries. With this in mind, we firmly believe that through the support of honest, benevolent, and equitable relations, Belarus and the United States will be able to bring bilateral relations to a smooth road of sustainable development.
Even during the most difficult period, our countries have cooperated on issues that are crucial for the security and well-being of the international community. In 1991, with the American proposal to the Belarusians to establish diplomatic relations, the role of our country was noted in the process of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. America consistently supports the independence of Belarus. Today, as 25 years ago, Belarus continues to act as a contributor to international security, taking an active part in the peaceful settlement of multilateral conflicts.
On this important date for diplomatic relations, we sincerely hope that the process of gradual improvement of relations between Belarus and the United States will not only promote the development of cooperation between our countries and resolve complex issues of bilateral relations, but will also become a factor in normalizing international situations and in strengthening regional security in Eastern Europe.
