Katya and Lena Naskovets are twin sisters. Lyosha and Sasha Ustinovich are twin brothers. Their last names will all soon be the same – Ustinovich. Katya is marrying
Sasha, and Lena is marrying Lyosha. I met the four in a park. As we strolled around talking, people turned to look at us. “Sometimes we hear people say behind our backs in the metro or on the bus: ‘Just look at them, they are identical,’” Sasha says. “The other day, the four of us were together on public transportation and a man kept staring at us. Suddenly he just couldn’t stand it any longer, and said ‘Do you really look that much alike or am I seeing double?’ But we actually think that we are different. For example, Lyosha has more of a round face, whereas mine is oval.” “People have always mixed Lena and me up – both in school and in college,” Katya chimes in. “Now that we both work in the ‘Vostochny’ department store, it sometimes gives customers a shock: ‘Oh, how come you are behind the cash register? I saw you just a minute ago in the meat department.’ I smile and say: ‘That’s my sister.’” The physical resemblance is inescapable, but they assure me that in terms of their characters they are completely different. Lena and Sasha are quiet, while Katya and Lyosha are boisterous.
«So, did opposites attract? »
“Well, a plus always gravitates towards a minus,” Sasha laughs. “That’s physics!
Those laws of physics kicked in very recently – in January of this year. The first ones “attracted” were Lyosha and Lena.
Lena recalls how it all began. “A friend of mine told me that he was friends with a guy who had a twin brother, and I just blurted out: it would be great to meet him. So my friend said, fine, and one evening the guys met me after work.”
“It was love at first sight,” says Lyosha, who is normally outgoing, but now, suddenly, looks embarrassed. “We talked for a bit and walked Lena home. Then I texted her on social media and I called her, and a week later I asked her out on a date.”
With Katya and Sasha, it was just the opposite. In February Lyosha invited Lena over, and she brought Katya with her. Sasha just happened to be visiting from another town.
“I didn’t like him at first,” Katya concedes. “He came across as somewhat arrogant because all he was talking about was work. I said to myself: what kind of a person is he? Is he interested in anything else besides money?”
Sasha, on the contrary, did not have any doubts: “I decided immediately: what a pretty girl! So, I tried to impress her.”
After that, Sasha and Katya did not see each other for a while. But a few weeks later, Lyosha was once again having friends over at his place. And Katya and Sasha found themselves together again.
“We talked a little, and I realized that my first impression of him was wrong. I saw that he was a really good person and that we had a lot to talk about,” Katya recalls. “The next time my sister was going to meet up with Lyosha, I asked her to invite me and Sasha.”
“I felt immediately that they would get together,” Lena says. “Why? I just saw how Sasha looked at my sister. And when our dad heard that my boyfriend had a twin brother, he said: ‘that’s it, girls, it’s all over now.’ It was said as a joke, but it actually happened.”
“I had not even met Sasha yet at that point,” Katya says, smiling.
«So, have you ever gone on a date in place of your sister, just as an experiment?”
«Sure, why not?» Lena laughs. “I was dating this guy about five years ago. He got sick and was taken to the hospital. In the evening, I was supposed to bring him juice and dinner but, as luck would have it, I got delayed at work.”
“My sister called me to ask me to go and see him,” Katya picks up the story. “But the guy did not know that Lena had a twin sister, so he did not notice the substitution. So, there we are, sitting in the ward and talking…”
“And then I run in,» smiles the other sister. “I was happy that I had I made it in time. The guy was in shock. He turned pale and we were afraid he would have a heart attack. Long story short, after that incident each of us takes care of our own business.”
«What happened to the guy?»
“Oh, he’s fine,” says Lena, thinking back.
“But he just wasn’t the one for me.” Incidentally, the twins’ parents were not surprised about the unusual couples. When they met each other, it turned out that the mums and dads had a lot of common friends, despite the fact that the families are from different cities. The Naskovetses live in Minsk, while the
Ustinoviches live in Maladzyechna. The twins went to the marriage registration office together. Lyosha and Lena were the first to go in to fill out the papers. The officer gave them the forms, and the couple asked for another set. “There are two more like us sitting out there, in the waiting room,” they
explained. “We left to fill out the forms and came
back together, all four of us,” Lyosha recalls. “The officer was standing but [when she saw the twins] she had to sit down. She said: ‘Oh my, you guys all look alike.’ She opened the passports to find that we looked alike in the passports, too.”
The woman’s shock did not last long, and she even suggested that the lovers register their marriages together.
“Did you two always want to marry on the same day?” I asked the sisters.
“No,” said Lena. “We only started thinking about it when we started dating the boys. Such coincidences are rare, so we decided: a double wedding is symbolic. Katya and I will be wearing similar dresses, and the boys will be wearing similar suits.”
“Why do you think two sisters fell in love with two brothers?”
“Destiny,” they replied.
